The Irish cricket team has historic victory over England that results in them claiming 18 year old record from the Indian cricket team.
On Tuesday, August 4th, the Irish cricket team faced England, who are World Champions, at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Southampton. In the third and final ODI, Ireland were chasing 329 runs. The Irish team had an excellent game and beat England on the last ball of the match.
Ireland’s win meant they beat India’s 18-year-old record of chasing the highest total against England at home. India’s record dates back to 2002 in the Natwest Trophy Final at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
In the Ireland vs England game it was Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie who partnered to claim the victory over England. Back in 2002, it was Kaif and Yuvraj who were successful at claiming the win over England at Lords.
Speaking after the game yesterday Bilbirnie said “We’ve beaten the T20 world champions in their own backyards and we’ve beaten the ODI champions.
“It’s a huge win for us and this group. For the young guys to be involved in this series but also be involved in a win like that is special and one we’ll remember forever.
“I don’t know if it’s sunk in. Hopefully, we’ve given the kids and the young generation a bit of a boost and something to strive towards.”
In light of the current COVID-19 restrictions in Ireland, the Irish team will not be able to celebrate their return to the Republic of Ireland. Instead, they will face a two-week quarantine. Bilbirnie went on to joke saying “Hopefully if the Government are watching they could let it slide for two weeks! It’s going to be frustrating but that’s just the way it’s going.
“It’s a strange situation but it’s been a strange situation for four months and we’ve just got to do as we’re told.
“It will be a strange two weeks but I’m sure I’ll find a couple of books or I might watch this game four or five times.”
