Former Australian batsman, Dean Jones has died of cardiac arrest. Jones was working as a commentator in Mumbai, covering the Indian Premier League (IPL) and was staying at the Trident Hotel when the incident occurred. Former Australian fast bowler, Bret Lee was present when Jones had the attack and tried his best to revive him.

However, Lee’s efforts were in vain as Jones was transferred to a hospital in South Mumbai where the staff were unable to revive the patient.

A statement from IPL broadcasters Star Sports read: “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr Dean Mervyn Jones AM. He died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time

The news of his death have left a sour patch on an otherwise exciting tournament that has seen underdogs such as Rajasthan Royals thrash fan favourites, the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Dean Jones enjoyed an international career that span across a decade. Jones made 164 one day international appearances and played 52 test matches. He averaged a remarkable 46.5 in test cricket much to the annoyance of his opposition.

In a statement Cricket Australia said: “Jones won admirers the world over with his dashing shot-making and superb fielding. He was also a stalwart of Victorian cricket during the 1980s and 1990s and retired as the state’s leading first-class run-scorer. Jones went on to become a highly-regarded coach and commentator. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2006 for his services to cricket and charity and was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2019.”

Tributes have been pouring in from Indian cricketers who such as Sachin Tendulkar who tweeted the following :”Absolutely heartbreaking news about Dean Jones passing away. A wonderful soul taken away too soon. Had the opportunity to play against him during my first tour of Australia. May his soul rest in peace and my condolences to his loved ones”
