As many as 33 people were arrested by Pimpri Chinchwad police in the latest high profile cricket betting racket. In the latest controversy to rock the cricket world, the people involved were arrested from three different locations. Their crime was taking bets from punters albeit in questionable circumstances. The match in question was the high profile encounter between India and England with Police said the accused coming to Pune via trains, flight and by road for cricket betting.
The accused were armed with binoculars and would take advantage of the six second delay between the actual match and the live telecast. Pimpri Chinchwad police commissioner Krishna Prakash had the following to say “The accused were taking advantage of the six seconds time lag while betting,”.
After getting wind of the illegal activity taking place, three team were formed comprising of senior police inspector Vivek Muglikar of Wakad police station. Three locations were targeted by the police including a high rise building, hillock near Dehuroad and a hotel in Pune city. The first two provided the vantage point that allowed the accused to watch the game using binoculars.
Also confiscated in the raid were 74 mobile phones, three laptops, Indian and foreign currency along with a four wheel drive jeep.
