Apart from questionable pop bands that dominated the television screens in the 90s, there was another icon that was beginning to cement his status during that time. A cricketer from Pakistan who had the tender age of 16, blasted the quickest century of just 37 bowls.

The person in question was none other than Shahid Afridi also known as ‘Lala’ or ‘Boom Boom Afridi’. Many critics were quick to point out the small size of the ground in Sri Lanka where this feat was achieved yet Afridi unperturbed by these comments continued to play HIS style of cricket till he retired. When firing on all cylinders, Afridi was unstoppable. It did not matter whether it was Bret Lee or Ashish Nehra on the bowling end. Fans would watch cricket balls fly off Afridi’s bat, making their way into car parks from around the world.

In a recent Q&A session on Twitter, Afridi was asked who his favourite batsman was from India. Now Afridi has bowled against the likes of Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dhoni, however the Pakistani batsman did not waste any time in naming Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as his favourite batsmen.

Both Kohli and Sharma are generally regarded as the best batsmen in the world. Both have impeccable technique and timing and continue to excel in all three formats of the game. The Indian captain has already scored 23,000 runs and is the only batsman in the world to have an average of 50 in the three different formats. If these stats are not enough to impress you then how about his tally of 70 international centuries. Kohli has scored 43 centuries in one day internationals and 27 in test matches.

Rohit Sharma is no slouch either and is the only cricketer to have have more than one double ton in ODIs. Sharma has three with a score of 264 (not out) as the highest individual score in ODIs. Sharma was in devastating form during the 2019 World Cup and scored five centuries during the tournament.

When asked about who he considers as the all time best batsmen in the world, Afridi gave the honours to Viv Richards, Pat Cummins was the best bowler in his opinion while both Brian Lara and AB de Villiers were the best batsmen he has ever bowled to.
