The backbone of any league tournament is formed by the teams that participate in it. The same is true for the Indian Premier League where the IPL teams are the heart and soul of the tournament. Quite a few teams have participated in the IPL with some leaving due to financial difficulties or legal disputes. Despite the issues, every year the tournament has comprised of eight teams.
All eight teams have fierce and loyal fans who come in thousands to cheer their team especially when matches are played on their home ground. The rivalry between teams also transcends into their fans making the game a high voltage carnival.

The IPL team also had its fair share of controversy. In 2015 Chennai Super Kings were banned from participating in IPL for two years owing to the owner’s involvement in the infamous 2013 betting scandal. So the team was not able to participate in the 2016 and 2017 IPL seasons.

IPL Teams that no longer exists
The dream of an IPL team has not been favourable for everyone and in the 12 seasons that have been played, there have been teams that got caught in the legal issue or financial turmoil because of which they had to dissolve. Below are the teams and a brief about them.
Kochi Tuskers
This IPL team debuted in 2011 and was based in Kochi, Kerala. The owner of the team was Rendezvous Consortium. The home ground for the team was Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi. Unfortunately the team dissolved after playing just one season.

It was in existence only for two years but managed to get into IPL finals in 2017 against Mumbai Indians. They lost the final by just 1 run.
Gujarat Lions
This IPL team just like Pune supergiant served as a replacement for two suspended teams – Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. The home ground of the team was Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot. It was owned by Keshav Bansal. They played for two seasons. In 2016 they scored 3rd spot in the league while in 2017 they scored 7th spot.
All eight IPL teams have their unique identities and achievements. They also have huge fan followings who support their team in their highs and lows. No one can predict which team will win the league as there have been a lot of instances where the unexpected teams have emerged from the bottom and went on to win the championship. And that’s exactly what makes Indian premier league the most popular tournament in the world.
